3D Blu-ray

According to IHS, in the past year (since June 2010) only 3.5 million 3D Blu-ray discs were sold. And about half of these were bundled with a Blu-ray player. Today there are still less than 100 3D Blu-ray titles available...

Samsung 3D Blu-ray player

Samsung's 2011 3D Blu-ray players are now shipping: 

• The top-of-the-line BD-D7500 (the world's slimmest player at 1.1") which includes 2D to 3D conversion, Wi-Fi, touch sensor control, DLNA and Samsung apps/hub. It costs $313.
• The BD-D7000: shaped like a cube and shares the same features as the BD-D7500. Costs $299 (but it's currently listed as 'out of stock').
• The BD-D6700: a slim design that features 2 HDMI outputs and Android/iPhone control. Costs $239.
• The BD-D6500 is slim again, and has Wi-Fi and Samsung Apps. It costs $176.

Sony is showing a new mobile Blu-ray player prototype - and this one has a glasses-free (parallax barrier) 3D display. The display is a 10."1 1366x768 LCD. It's just a prototype - no news whether Sony wants to commercialize this...

Update: the new player will be called the BD-D7500.

It seems that Samsung is set to release a new 3D Blu-ray player at CES (January 2011) that will be the world's thinnest (at 23mm thick). Apparently it will enable 2D to 3D conversion, and also built-in youTube, twitter, facebook and other applications.

Panasonic says that their Avatar-3D exclusivity will run until February 2012. Panasonic are now offering Avatar on Blu-ray 3D - for people who buy their 3D TVs. These are bundles that include the Avatar copy, a Viera VT25 plasma 3D TV, two pairs of active-shutter glasses and a DMP-BDT100 Blu-ray player.

Panasonic are currently offering four bundles, according to the TV size: The 42" TV costs $1429, 50" costs $1789, 54" costs $2999 and 58" costs $3399. You can already find copies of Avatar 3D Blu-ray on eBay - for $160 to $400.

DVDFab released the first Blu-ray 3D ripper software (named, obviously, the DVDFab Blu-ray 3D Ripper). It can rip any Blu-ray 3D content and output into AVI, MP4, WMV or MKV. 3D is supported in several formats (side-by-side and left/right or top/bottom 3D type).
