2D to 3D conversion explainedThis is a guest article written by YUVsoft Corp, an R&D company offering professional software for 2D–to–stereo 3D semiautomatic conversion as well as stereo video conversion and quality enhancement. Nowadays it is not a problem to create a 3D image using the source 2D one. The object seems volumetric since we can see it from two a little different directions simultaneously (due to the presence of two eyes). As we know, 3D videos are often received using two cameras-each of them assumes the function of viewer’s eye. But even in case of using only the single camera during the filming, the image for the second eye can be created automatically with the help of up-to-date soft. So, to receive a 3D video, the stereomate for the each frame of the source video should be created. The most essential point to receive the stereomate is to receive a depth map for the each frame-to establish, how far from the camera each object in the frame was. Traditionally the foreground objects are painted light on the depth maps, and the further is the object, the darker is the corresponding area of the depth map (The sky region is often painted black).
