HR3D - a new glasses-free 3D technology based on bi-layer LCDs

Researchers from MIT developed a new glasses free 3D technology they call High Rank 3D (HR3D) - and already developed a prototype display. The idea is to use a pair of layered LCDs that give the illusion of depth. The top layer acts as a mask that displays a variable pattern (based on the image displays in the bottom layer). According to the researchers, the new display does not compromise on brightness, resolution and viewing angle, and has a good battery life.

For the prototype, they used a couple of Viewsonic VX2265wm LCDs.
